Student TechMeetup

“So, what is Student TechMeetup?”

That’s a good question – we’re glad you asked! In short, Student TechMeetup (commonly abbreviated STMU) is simply CompSoc’s own version of TechMeetup, but geared more towards students than people already working in the industry. For some of you that may be enough explanation, and that’s good – you can stop reading this section now, and we’ll hopefully see you at the next STMU! Others, however, may never have heard of TechMeetup, and so may still have no idea what’s going on. That’s perfectly alright, it’s what the remainder of this section is here for!

Basically, Student TechMeetup is a chance for you to socialise (or “network”) with both other students from here at the University of Edinburgh and with various industry professionals, backed up with two or three talks each month from the aforementioned industry professionals, and the aforementioned students! Oh, and free pizza and drinks too! We have talks on almost anything, ranging from PHP to Google to Flash games, and we are always wanting to hear from anyone who wishes to give a talk for us – whether they’re a professional or a student!

Entry is free to CompSoc members, and there is a charge of £2 for entry to non-CompSoc members (sorry, we have to try and cover some of the cost of the pizzas!) We do encourage any non-members to consider becoming members as it’s only £4 for the entire year.

“Alright, so when is it?”

Another good question! For the remainder of 2011, Student TechMeetup currently takes place on the first Tuesday of every month, starting at 19:00. The rough schedule for each night is as follows:

  • 18:45-19:00 – Pre-talk networking and a small introduction by the host-speaker. Also, a chance to grab a drink.
  • 19:00-19:30 – The first talk. Usually followed by a quick questions section if we are not doing a Q&A panel later.
  • 19:30-19:50 – Food time! Grab a few slices of pizza and have a chat with your fellow students or any industry-types that are there.
  • 19:50-20:20 – The second talk. Again usually followed by a quick questions section if we are not doing a Q&A panel.
  • 20:20-20:30 – Another short networking session, and a chance to grab more drinks (if there’s any left).
  • 20:30-end – Either the third talk, or a Q&A Panel session, or something-else.

STMU ‘officially’ ends at 21:00, but many of our attendees and organisers drop by Teviot for an post-STMU drink, and we would love for you to join us! We don’t usually have a specific room that we go to within Teviot, but just grab a CompSoc committee member after STMU finishes (we’ll be the ones pushing chairs around and tidying away pizza boxes and the like), and we’ll point you in the right direction for the night!

“So, that’s what and when – how about where?”

Student TechMeetup usually takes place in the Informatics Forum, at 10 Crichton Street, Edinburgh (map). Usually we are in room G.07 – just on your left as you come into the forum (don’t worry, it’s always very obvious where we are – if there aren’t signs then there will be Committee members at the entrance to point you in the right direction!). Occasionally we may be forced to change location due to the room being pre-booked by other people, so please check the events page for the upcoming STMU each month!
